Bridge Lighting Design - Nanyang Bridge 2013 / 06

Location

The Nanyang Bridge is situated in the Houbu District of Xinbei City in Taiwan. As a prominent steel arch bridge, it is an important representation of the local characteristics of Xinbei City. In recent years, the Taipei City Government has invested in the transformation of public landscapes through lighting design. The lighting design of Nanyang Bridge is one of the key projects in the upgrade and future of the new captital of New Taipei City.

Lighting Design

During the day time, the Nanyang bridge is a local specialty, known for is beautiful big red arch. It was our aim therefore to create a new experience for the bridge during the night time. We utilise the existing red colour of the bridge and project light to highlight this colour during the night time. We used luminaires with a high colour rendering index to preserve the true quality of the colour. The implementation of colourful spotlights on the steel cables also adds a new rainbow effect and allows the bridge to shine like a crowning jewel of the city.

Low Glare Requirements

Rooster's standards for lighting are high than the usual demand for streetlighting. We provided the first low-profile bridge lighting fixtures to replace the existing 10 metre high street lights. These low-profile street lights are positioned below the eyeline of the driver to reduce glare and provide the correct illumination for the road. The implementation of these lights has also reduced the light pollution from the original 10 metre high street lights and has allowed the lighting sculpture of the bridge to become a more dominant feature during the night.
