Road Lighting Design - Guoti Road - Kaohsiung City  2012 / 05

Design Brief

Roads are the bloodline of any modern day city, however excessive information on signs, streetlights , traffic signs, pedestrian signs and advertisements is a great cause of confusion. It is important for road users to identify signs and signals more easily, however in Taiwan there is an over-abundance of information. In collaboration with the Kaohsiung City Development Team, Rooster Lighting set out to solve this problem through a design framework which considered factors such as sustainability, and subtractive aethetics.

Lighting Design

The design solution considers a a central light pole with the multi-function of attaching signage for road users and pedestrians for both directions of traffic. The light pole also allows for the addition of customised light peices to create a common theme in any surrounding landscape of a city. The modular design approach also simplifies the process of replacing road signs in the future. With strict optical calculations, the multi function light poles can be evenly distrubuted on the road for a seamless and comfortable dirving experience. The simplicity of design elements and signage on the pole are common-sensical and can be understood quickly and easily at road intersections and pedestrian crossings. A recent example of these street lights is the completion of the "Yufeng" theme street lamp on Cathay Road in Kaohsiung City. The modern and subtractive design elements of the light have enhances the modern aethetic and culture around the Weiwuying Art and Cultural Center.
