The new railway underground Kaohsiung Station is the highest achievement of the undergroundization of the Kaohsiung Metropolitan Area. The project contains seven underground stations along the 9.75 KM railway tunnel, making it a true transportation hub combining train, MRT, Local and intercity bus services, taxis and bicycles. As a key project for urban renewal, the above-ground station aims to increase valuable public green space and develop local commuities. The central hall of the new Kaohsiung Station unfolds with a bright ceiling of Rooster Lighting's oval lighting. Passengers walking up into the area from the underground platforms are immersed in a familliar and immersive space. The station's large curved canopy stretches out to the city with strong attitude, acting as a green connector, unifying the different moes of transport and representing Kaohsiung's vision of a future and sustainable city.
Lighting Design
The work of Rooster Lighting in this grand scale station design is the design, production and manufacture of the main lighting lanterns scattered underneath the station's canopy. The lanterns are based on the design themes presented by Dutch architecture company, Mecanoo Architecture. The design of the lantern attempts to represent the traditional lantern culture in a modern aesthetic. With the integration of the DALI control system, the lights can be individual controlled, adjusted and lowed from the ceiling for easy maintenance.
The luminaire is divided into 2 light sources. The downlight with an adjustable reflector insert and the 360 degree illumination around the lantern. After rigorous lighting calculations, the downlights have been spaced at heights of the ceiling, considering the multpiple heights of the ceiling and floor levels. The lighting levels are set to provide a consistent lighting feel and not cause any shadow on passenger's faces.
In addition with the luminaire design, the lifting mechanism has been integrated with a total adjustable length of 25 meters, making maintenence safe and convenient from the ground. It is hoped that Kaohsiung Station will bring tranquillity in the lighting environment for an unforgettable commuting experience.
